About the FAA Instrument Rating written test

What does the FAA instrument rating written test cover?

Instrument flight rules, flight instruments and avionics, IFR weather and weather services, en route and approach charts, holding and approach procedures, ATC and communication procedures, navigation systems, and aeronautical decision-making under IFR. The questions follow the FAA Instrument Rating Airman Certification Standards.

How many questions are on the instrument rating written test?

60 multiple-choice questions, with 2 hours 30 minutes to finish. You take it at an FAA-approved testing center.

What score do I need to pass?

70% or higher. Your test report lists a code for each question you missed, and your instructor goes over those areas with you before the checkride.

Do I need an endorsement to take the test?

Yes. You need a sign-off from a flight instructor or from an FAA-accepted home-study course. Sporty's Instrument Rating Course issues the endorsement when you pass its practice FAA tests.

How should I practice for the written test?

Study one question category at a time, then review the questions you marked or missed, then use random and smart-study sessions to find weak spots. Finish with full-length practice FAA tests under the real time limit. You can start studying here for free.

How long is a passing score good for?

24 calendar months. You must pass your checkride within that time or take the written test again.
